Social Networking in 140 characters

I haven’t blogged in quite a while, since I found that my emotions could be condensed into 140 characters - embracing the likes of twitter.com, ping.fm, facebook status updates and similar social networking facilitators.

However, I don’t spend as much time on these social sites (as it may immediately appear), since most sites have allowed each other to steal status updates via a myriad of services. You just have to take the time to interconnect them all and keep track of all the passwords. In fact if you look at some of the older posts, a few of my thoughts slipped through the cracks and were delivered as blogs.

But… are 140 characters enough to deliver a sentiment or a link? I think NOT. The internet became a sea of abbreviations and condensed terms to fit into the tight space – LMAO, LMFAO, OMG, BRB, GTG. This changes the way we speak and acronyms have become commonplace, virtually shouted to someone who will listen.

Social sites are full of people trying to leverage the medium as a way to sell you something or as the new term suggests monetize your online experience. I will gladly accept all friendships, but find it wasteful when someone sees me only as another way to visit a commercial enterprise or deliver an advertisement. I am in it for information, rather than being an active shopper. What a quick way to lose a “friend” than simply by sending them an invitation to check out a commercial or a way to get rich quick. We are starting to differentiate between talking to and talking at, even if it is via word exchanges.

In the days, where having an online friend means you have encountered them somewhere in your online exploits, rather than an actual person that would be invited to your house for dinner and drinks. The internet is changing the language, where the word friend is thrown in the same manner as acquaintance used to be.

If we have befriended each other somewhere online, let’s make this relationship work... drinks and BBQ at my house – you bring the drinks.
